Founded in 2005, the Sweet Dreams Cooperative is a small group of young women in San Francisco who create handmade products and bring them to market. The Sweet Dreams Cooperative is part of the Turning Heads Project’s Sewing and Fashion Design Program.
The purpose of the Cooperative is to expose and train members in key aspects of the cooperative business model and facilitate real-world experiences in entrepreneurship. Meeting weekly, members participate in all aspects of the Co-op including: product design, creation and packaging; material and production inventory; bookkeeping; and marketing. Their handmade products include 100% organic lavender and flax seed eye pillows, yoga mat bags, and dream pillows. Members have created a business plan, produced a commercial, participated in sales events and public presentations, and conducted market research interviews. While learning the skills needed to run a small business cooperative, they are successfully marketing their products to yoga studios, boutiques and retail stores in San Francisco. Lastly, all members share the profits of the Co-op equally.

I’d like to see something like this happen in my neighborhood–for adult women as well as for youth!
